The Cellar Door

Our tasting space has been integrated into the original Melba estate, encapsulated by the iconic 100 year old cyprus hedge. Casual tastings are available at the large marble stand-up tasting bar. Tastings for groups can be accommodated within The Garden Terrace. Food can be combined with tastings within the Garden Terrace or within the Estate Courtyard.

Coombe Yarra Valley combines the provenance and heritage of the Estate with cool climate fruit, to create small batch wines of exquisite complexity and quality.

Estate range

Our Estate wines are a reflection of the distinct terroir of the valley soils, an uncompromising approach to quality and 100 years of family legacy. Made from premium Yarra fruit, the range personifies the unique varietal characters of the region. Ideal to drink now, but may benefit from age.

Tribute range

The Tribute Series wines represent our finest, single site expressions. Barrels are handpicked just prior to blending ensuring they align with the quality standard we have grown to expect. The wines are crafted with distinctive sophistication and artistry, a fitting homage to Melba.

The Garden Terrace

Situated at the rear of the cellar door is the alfresco Garden Terrace. Enjoying the over 100 year old hedge our guests can enjoy wine flights and platters in a comfortable outdoor area.

The range features fine, traditional style sparkling and elegant, cool climate tables wines that are classically varietal and regionally expressive. All wines are handcrafted in small volumes, from fruit deemed to be the best the vineyard has to offer.

Estate and Vineyard Location

The Coombe Farm Vineyards are located in the heart of the Yarra Valley. Just 5km north of the Melba Estate, the 120-acre Coombe Farm vineyard is one of the oldest in the valley, and is still owned and operated by Melba's descendants, the Vestey family. Having supplied grapes to some of Australia's most recognised producers, an increasing portion of fruit is now being grown and selected specifically for Coombe Yarra Valley Wines.

The soils are a combination of sandy loam to clay loam topsoils over a yellowish friable clay subsoil. The soils are well suited to vines growing premium cool climate grapes. Annual soil testing occurs with additions of minerals, trace elements and organic compounds to maintain the soil producing capacity.

The Chardonnay blocks are situated on the gentle lower slopes that range from 76 to 88 meters above sea level. Slopes generally fall to the south-west and south-east and result is a cool site to produce wine grapes.

The majority of Pinot noir is planted around the slopes of Mary’s Mount. The blocks face north-west, west and south-west and range from 86 to 130 meters above sea level.

More recent plantings of Cabernet and Shiraz are on the warmer north-west slopes of Mary’s Mount.

New plantings of Pinot noir are on the slightly cooler gentle lower slopes.
